The Safety of All Dogs: Why We No Longer Accept Reactive or Unsocialized Dogs

Updated: Jul 26

At Tucked Inn, the well-being and safety of every dog in our care are our top priorities. Over the years, we've received numerous inquiries from pet owners seeking a safe haven for their reactive or unsocialized dogs. Historically, we were able to accommodate occasional requests like these with our private studio suite. However, given the recent rise in such requests, we find ourselves at a crossroads, where the increasing demand exceeds our capacity and resources.

Reactive and unsocialized dogs often require specialized care and environments to ensure their safety and the safety of others. Our facility operates on a highly social model, where dogs interact with each other in a controlled but dynamic setting. This social environment is designed to provide enrichment, exercise, and companionship for well-socialized dogs. However, for reactive dogs, this can be overwhelming and potentially dangerous.

Understanding Reactive Behaviour

Reactive dogs are those that display heightened emotional responses to certain stimuli, such as other dogs, people, or even specific environments. These reactions can manifest as fear, aggression, or extreme anxiety. Unsocialized dogs, on the other hand, may not have had sufficient exposure to various social situations, leading to unpredictable behaviour when they encounter new or unfamiliar stimuli.

While reactive and unsocialized behaviours are often manageable with the right training and environment, they require a level of attention and expertise that goes beyond what we can provide in our current setting. Ensuring the safety and well-being of these dogs, as well as the other dogs in our care, necessitates a more specialized approach.

Our Commitment to Safety

The safety of all dogs at our facility is paramount. Our team is dedicated to creating a positive and secure environment where every dog can thrive. To maintain this standard, we must be realistic about our capabilities and limitations.

In the past, our private studio suite allowed us to cater to a small number of reactive or unsocialized dogs. However, the growing popularity of our facility and the corresponding increase in demand for these specialized accommodations have made it clear that we can no longer provide the necessary level of care without compromising the safety and well-being of all our guests.

Finding the Right Fit

We deeply understand the challenges that come with caring for a reactive or unsocialized dog. As dog lovers and professionals, it pains us to turn away any pet in need. However, we must prioritize the collective safety and happiness of the dogs we care for.

If you have a reactive or unsocialized dog, we recommend seeking out facilities or professionals who specialize in behavioural training and rehabilitation. These experts have the tools, training, and environments necessary to help your dog feel safe and secure while addressing their specific needs.

Moving Forward

We appreciate the trust and confidence that our clients place in us, and we remain committed to providing the highest standard of care for all our guests. This decision, while difficult, is necessary to ensure that we can continue to offer a safe and enriching environment for every dog at our facility.

Thank you for your understanding and support as we navigate these changes. Together, we can ensure that every dog receives the care and attention they deserve.
